For years we have consistently expressed how much we value having students as part of our congregation, and firmly believe that they are the future of Emergence.
The mission that we have for students is the mission that we have for our whole congregation: to Love Jesus, Love People, and Plow a Counter-Culture.
The goal for eHS is to see young men and women discipled well. We seek to build deep, meaningful, Christ-centered relationships with students, so that they may develop as well-equipped missionaries in North Jersey now, and wherever they may be called to in the future.
Discipleship needs to start early. Jesus spent three years pouring into his disciples. Just before he left them to be with the Father, he gave them a very clear command: “…go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you...” (Matt. 28:19-20a). Jesus took these final moments to reinforce how important discipleship was to him. In his letter to the church in Ephesus, Paul reinforced that discipleship shouldn’t be restricted to only adults when he tells them, “Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.” (Eph 6:4).
Many times, students aren’t given an opportunity to reach their full potential. High Schoolers are often thrown into the same mix as elementary and middle school students, when, in reality, these pending-adults are only a few years from their careers. As students begin to understand, in more depth, what Christ-centered community looks like in their contexts, they will be stretched and encouraged to reflect the love of Jesus in their respective networks.
Right On! But what does that actually look like?
Each week during the 11:30am service we come together to walk through books of the Bible together. Much like the format for the main service, we study verse-by-verse, challenging students to study truths we see in scripture. We encourage students to attend one of the other services and view this time as a valuable additive to the main gathering.
